Summary:
The opening game of the series was a nail-biter. Oakland got out to a quick 2-0 lead on a 2-run home run by LF Bert Root, his 7th of the post-season. Montreal countered in the 4th with a a 2-run inning to tie the game on Julio Guillen’s 3rd home run of the post-season, and an RBI infield single by Manny Martin. Oakland used 5 pitchers to hold Montreal to 7 hits and 2 runs, while Montreal used 3 pitchers through 10 innings to hold Oakland to 4 hits and 2 runs. Vin Herrera of the Expos had a nightmare of an 11th inning, costing Montreal the game by giving up 2 hits, including C Jake Rhodes 7th of the playoffs to lose the game. Rigo Silva gave up a hit in the bottom of the 11th, but held on for the save.
Oakland leads, 1-0.
